Looking at the Ukraine crisis and the conflict in the country's Donbas region where separatists are fighting for control, the author of this commentary looks at analogies between the situation there and that in Moldova's Transdniestria region. He also discusses 1) Russia's involvement in the Transdniestria conflict since the collapse of the Soviet Union 2) what lessons both Moscow and the West can take from this involvement; and 3) a brief overview of the history of Russian-Ukrainian border disputes.
