This paper explores the past, present and future distribution of power and influence in Africa, with a particular emphasis on Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and South Africa. More specifically, the paper's authors believe 1) Ethiopia and Nigeria will gain in power while Algeria, Egypt and South Africa will most likely stagnate or decline in influence; 2) Ethiopia and South Africa currently have more power than their capabilities justify; and 3) if Nigeria were to implement needed governmental and social reforms, it could become a hegemonic power throughout the African continent.
