This paper examines the political possibility of a confederation of the two Korean nations and analyzes the influence of the major powers on the Korean Peninsula. The author discusses Korean reunification rhetoric in the context of the Cold War and points out the positions of the major powers towards Korean reunification. The author explains how several of the great powers do not wish to see North Korea collapse. The paper also states that Kim Dae-Jung's three-stage unification proposal, known as the "Sunshine Policy," is unrealistic in terms of the expectations it creates.
