This paper provides an overview of the 'building blocks' approach to nuclear disarmament, as outlined in a Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) working paper submitted by a group of states, many of which depend on nuclear weapons through military alliance arrangements. The author contends that although the paper did not explicitly define the approach, it can be broadly understood as 1) the implementation of practical measures, such as the NPT itself, to bring about nuclear disarmament; and 2) a method that invites analysis of the roles and responsibilities associated with the crafting and implementation of such measures in which not all states need to be involved in discussions on all aspects of nuclear disarmament.
