This report explores the process and outcome of Afghanistan’s 2014 presidential election and details how the development of democracy in the country is obstructed by several factors. In particular, the author discusses the adverse effects of bargaining among the Afghan political elite, and explains how democracy and elections are problematic in a country with limited popular access to information. Finally, he sets out five lessons which can be drawn from the 2014 elections in order to help bring about democratic reform in Afghanistan.
