This brief describes the unstable political situation in Burundi in the run up to the country's municipal, legislative and presidential elections in late June 2015. It discusses some of the factors behind the instability, including President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to run for a fourth term in office, and recommends ways to improve the country’s political, electoral and security status. Finally, the brief sets out five scenarios on how the country's instability might play itself out over time.
