This paper provides a theoretical framework for research on how integration into the EU shapes civil society in Eastern applicant countries. The author uncovers mechanisms by which the overall process of integrating into the EU influences the development of civil society in the region. The paper concludes that EU membership could have a positive impact on the participation of civil society and NGOs in the political process.
