This paper examines the tensions between democracy and the integration of Eastern applicant countries into the EU. The author explains the influence of a democratic deficit within the European Union on democracy in the applicant countries. The paper concludes that the EU as a democracy promoter is struggling with its own democratic deficit and more research on the topic is needed.
