This report provides an overview of the events which had an impact on the relationship between the United States and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, a relationship which went from one of warmth at the beginning of 2002 to one of hostility and suspicion in 2014. The author traces the causes of this deterioration to US actions and Karzai’s world view and experience. He concludes with a set of reflective suggestions for the United States on how to deal with Afghanistan in the future.
