This commentary discusses some of the ways in which Hamas is maneuvering to maintain its position of power in the Gaza Strip. In particular, the authors examine Hamas' 1) unofficial negotiations with Israel over the possibility of establishing a seaport in the Gaza Strip; 2) attempts to reconcile with Fatah as well as improve relations with Saudi Arabia and Egypt; and 3) preservation of a channel of communications with Iran as part of the organization's preparations for further rounds of conflict with Israel. The authors then briefly examine the implications of these developments for Israel.
