This is transcript of a speech by Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Executive Director of UN Women, on developments to achieve gender equality around the globe since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration on equality in 1995. In her speech, Mlambo-Ngcuka first looks at areas where there has been progress, including in female access to labor markets and education, women’s health and the promotion of gender equality. She then focuses on the challenges that have hindered the implementation of the Declaration, including social expectations that trap women in unpaid work, and how they can be addressed and concludes with the role men can play in achieving gender equality.
