This commentary takes a critical look at operation EUNAVFOR MED, the EU's new strategy against smugglers trafficking migrants across the Mediterranean. The authors identify several blind spots in the logistics and legal mandate of the strategy, arguing that these may undermine the mission if not tackled. They contend, however, that despite its numerous limitations, EUNAVFOR MED could mark a turning point in the EU’s security narrative, as it is finally addressing the security threats in the EU's southern neighborhood. All in all, the authors emphasize that a more assertive EU presence in the Mediterranean is badly needed, as civilian measures alone have proved ineffective.
