This bulletin reviews the advantages the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), to be established by the end of 2015, is expected to bring to US companies. The author argues that the integrated regional economic and financial system that the AEC is aiming for will lower transaction costs and bring political stability to the region through increased cooperation, and that this will facilitate American investment. Looking ahead, the author examines air travel and banking as two areas of particular interest to American companies once they have been liberalized within the AEC framework.
