This paper analyzes US foreign policy strategy towards the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, and contends the P5+1 nuclear agreement with Iran demonstrates that the US is on the verge of giving up its influence in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. The author argues that the nuclear agreement is harmful to the US and the Middle East for two reasons: 1) it gives Iran the possibility pursue its goal to establish regional hegemony; and 2) the nuclear deal might unleash a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. In the conclusion the author makes the case that US President Obama's policy towards Iran, as well as towards Russia and China, show that his administration does not possess the necessary skills to manage the relative US decline in such a way that can ensure the future peace and prosperity of the Middle East or the rest of the world.
