This paper discusses the Finnish perceptions of German influence in Europe by analyzing certain historical episodes since the World Wars. The author claims that the main perception is positive, and that critical views arise from bad experiences with the Soviet Union rather than directly with Germany. The paper further examines Finland's view on the leadership of larger states in Europe. It concludes that the opinion prevails that it is in the interest of Finland to let larger states decide the main issues, as long as smaller states are guaranteed an equal formal status.
