This paper focuses on the Israeli government’s expected approval of increased gas exports from the Tamar field, as well as its plans for gas production at the Leviathan field. According to the author, even though these plans have not yet been approved, their implications for Israel’s international relations deserve to be discussed. The author then 1) outlines the strategic benefits Israel would gain from the new framework for the gas sector, especially if the country would start to sell gas both from the Tamar and Leviathan fields; 2) looks at the possible changes in the Israeli gas exports that could result from the proposed plans; and 3) discusses the limitations of the plan as well as what needs to be done to address them, including the necessity to address the ongoing internal debate in Israel that is delaying the implementation process of the plans.
