This analysis discusses Indonesia's protectionist economic policies and the main reasons the country is adopting these. The authors find that 1) the trend towards protectionism enjoys broad political support in Jakarta; 3) despite increasing economic challenges, Indonesia is likely to continue to raise non-tariff barriers to trade; and 3) protectionist measures are likely to prove counterproductive for Indonesia's economic prospects, raise prices for the country's consumers, and reduce the competitiveness of Indonesian firms.
