Should South Korea deploy a US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system on its soil? This bulletin focuses on the debate now going on within the country on this issue. The bulletin’s authors also 1) discuss why China is pressuring the South Koreans to oppose the THAAD deployment, which the US favors; and 2) contend that rather than worrying about China’s reactions to the system, South Korean policymakers and the public need to focus more on its cost, feasibility, and utility against North Korean missiles.
