This brief examines the problems of youth radicalization and its ties to extremist violence in Afghanistan. More specifically, the brief’s author focuses on 1) the outsized nature of the problem, given the size of the country’s youth population; 2) the factors that make young Afghans susceptible to radicalization, especially males; 3) the methods used by extremist groups to encourage youths to join their cause; 4) the influence that parents and family members have on radicalization and its prevention; and 5) how to combat the narratives used by extremist groups on multiple levels.
