This bulletin contends that ASEAN's unity and coherency are being increasingly threatened by the diverging interests of its member states. Indonesia, for example, is increasingly drifting away from the organization because it views ASEAN as too small, weak, and disunited to represent Jakarta's interests in the Indo-Pacific region. The negative repercussions of such a view can of course be wide-ranging, including weakening the idea of a multilateral solution to the ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
