This paper discusses how Russia’s expanded involvement in the Syrian civil war in September 2015 is likely to have significant implications for the balance of power in the conflict, and for the struggle between the superpowers for global influence. The authors also 1) put forward some suggestions for what strategic thinking may be motivating the Kremlin's intervention; and 2) discuss the potential implications of Russia's support for the government of Bashar al-Assad, and by extension his Hizbollah and Iranian allies, for Israel.
