This issue of the CEJISS features five articles on a variety of security topics. The featured article argues that military conscription must be extended and deepened, especially in Europe, if democratic societies hope to deal with the complex security challenges they face today. The second piece then examines China’s rise to power in East Asia and evaluates how the US and EU have responded to this development. The next article analyzes EU-Iranian energy relations, specifically via the concept of 'actorness'. The fourth piece looks at the governance and authority being exercised by armed gangs in the slums of Rio de Janeiro (it's a form of "insurgency as competition"). Finally, the fifth article surveys ancient and modern "ontological accounts" in order to determine how warriors have related to the regimes they’ve served.
