This brief provides a statistical portrait of the suicide attacks that were conducted throughout the world in 2015. As in the recent past, the greatest number of attacks occurred in the Middle East, where 452 individuals carried out 207 attacks. In turn, 1) the number of suicide operations in Africa grew by 157% in 2015; 2) the number of suicide attacks carried out by women rose sharply; 3) the so-called Islamic State played a prominent role in 174 assaults (either directly or indirectly); and 4) the number of suicide terrorist attacks in Southern Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, actually fell.
