This paper examines the legal obligations, under international law, of the countries the Rohingya refugees are trying to reach – Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. More specifically, the text’s author 1) assesses the extent of the destination countries’ compliance with their legal obligations thus far; 2) explores the durability of their compliance, which is likely to be short-lived; and 3) shows that international law by itself cannot offer a comprehensive solution to the Rohingyas’ troubles.
