This commentary reviews the dispute between the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Apple, Inc over divulging the contents of a mobile device used by one of the San Bernardino terrorists, Syed Rizwan Farook. Among other issues related to the case, the text's author discusses 1) the technical features of the iPhone 5c that Farook used; 2) the FBI's demand that Apple create a new version of its iOS operating system, which would enable law enforcement agencies to access the contents of the company’s products more easily; 3) why Apple has rejected this demand; and 4) a possible compromise which would provide access, but without compromising Apple's encryption software.
