The 2016 edition of CSS’s “Strategic Trends” volume explores five ways in which the world’s geopolitical balance is shifting. More specifically, the text explores 1) the renationalization of European defense politics; 2) the political economy of mass migration, including the conceptual and institutional challenges it poses for the EU; 3) China’s activities in the South China Sea, which constitute a maritime version of hybrid warfare; 4) the increased salience of nuclear weapons, which unfortunately coincides with a general lack of interest in next-step arms control; and 5) the implications of a world energy order in destabilizing flux.
