Feb 2016

On 15 February 2016 Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) applied to join the EU. Unfortunately, its internal problems haven't changed. Local politicians remain preoccupied with grassroots power struggles and stoking ethnic tensions. As a result, economic and social reforms continue to lag in one of the poorest countries in Europe, as described by this report. Indeed, the latter 1) provides an in-depth analysis of the internal challenges BiH faces; 2) examines the interests international actors have in the country; and 3) wonders whether the outsiders’ involvement is actually hindering needed internal reforms.
