This paper analyzes the battle of El Adde, which took place in the Gedo region of Somalia in January 2016. The text’s author contends that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) suffered their largest military defeat ever because of their poor operations structure and procedures, and because company-sized forces were deployed in remote and hence vulnerable forward operating bases. The author also provides a number of lessons the attack on El Adde can offer to the KDF, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and other peace operations.
