In light of the June 2017 military standoff between China and India in Doklam, this report examines how the shifting geopolitical environment in the Indo-Pacific is affecting ties between Beijing and New Delhi. The text’s authors conclude that despite China and India’s substantial economic ties and common interests, territorial issues and strategic competition will continue to spur New Delhi to counterbalance against its neighbor. As a result, they also provide recommendations on what initiatives India should take – both independently and in concert with the US and other nations – to affirm its role in the Indo-Pacific.
