This report analyzes the conflict between Israel and two US State Department-designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs), the Lebanese Shi'ite Muslim group Hezbollah and the radical Palestinian Hamas organization. The study describes in greater detail US policy issues as well as the international diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. Additionally, it addresses the implications of the military situation for regional stability; Syrian influence in Lebanon and calls for Lebanese independence; and Iran's regional aspirations and pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and energy security.
