This paper discusses energy issues in the context of Asian economic growth. It also examines the stronger demand for energy and the relative scarcity of oil and gas in the Asian region. The author argues that fast-rising Asian demand for oil and gas has been responsible for much of the upward pressure on international prices since 2003. Further, he points out that Asian energy firms have also exploded onto the international energy stage, generating the widespread perception of much fiercer competition among the world's private and state-run oil and gas firms, and raising the specter of geopolitical competition for energy resources, both within Asia and around the globe.
