This author of this paper argues that Spain and the US have several points of mutual interest and concern, particularly the US bases in Spain, the large Spanish investments in Latin America - America's backyard- and the growing importance of the Hispanic community in the US. He states that none of these factors on their own make Spain a particularly important country for the US, but that together they do give Spain an added significance. In regard to direct investment in Spain, the US is still a significant investor, while in terms of Spanish exports and direct investment in the US, levels remain comparatively low. Further, the author sees considerable scope for closer cooperation in the scientific and technological fields as well as in cultural relations.
