This paper describes the strengths and opportunities of the Indian pharmaceutical industry. Beginning with a concise description of the Indian pharmaceutical industry, the author further highlights challenges resulting from WTO regulations such as TRIP regulations and product and process patents. The paper further presents an overview of foreign direct investment in India and Indian exports of pharmaceutical products. To conclude, the author insists on the necessity of in-house R&D.
