This paper focuses on China's role in developments in the Mekong basin. It first discusses the key regional implications of China's hydropower development projects on the upper Mekong, focusing on the potential ecological and political impact. The second section investigates the prevailing regional approaches to developing and managing the Mekong river basin. The final section assesses whether securitizing China's resource development on the upper Mekong can help address regional security implications, and offers some suggestions as to how the issues might be conceptualized.
