This paper about Malaysia's relations with the US raises three questions by comparing the relations under the Clinton and the George H W Bush administrations. The questions raised are: first, what explains the dualism in relations between Malaysia and the US; second, whether criticism of the US represents mere rhetoric on the part of Malaysia's leaders; and third, the extent to which Malaysia has translated its criticisms of the US into more concrete actions. The final section briefly anticipates the future course of relations.
