This paper addresses the issue of child labor in sub-Saharan Africa and presents a survey of research findings from this field of interest. The paper pays special attention to child labor in private households as the most prominent form, reviews consequences for the children's schooling and discusses different reasons for child labor. The paper draws on research from social anthropology and economics. It argues that despite the research done, the significance of child labor in private households is still unclear.
