This paper addresses the issue of child labor in sub-Saharan Africa with special attention to children separated from their families and children prematurely responsible for their own economic survival. The paper discusses the children's share of the household's labor supply and consumption, reviews economic and societal factors and introduces major markets for child labor. The author argues that extensive poverty, emerging land scarcity and the decay of the traditional African family organization are the major causes for the problem of uncontrolled child labor in sub-Saharan Africa.
