This paper discusses reasons why some young people join racist groups, the factors and circumstances that cause most of them eventually to consider disengaging, and what prevents some of them from doing so. The paper explores group dimensions of violence, different causes of entry to racist groups, community-building within the groups and reasons for and against leaving. Subsequently, the author introduces in detail a Norwegian exit project that promoted disengagement and outlines the project’s spread to other European countries.
