This briefing examines the peace process in Sierra Leone and the prospects for national elections in 2002. It describes the internal security environment, external security threats, and problems of an early election, such as the manipulated and unprepared national electoral commission, and the questionable voting system. It concludes by urging greater commitment to election management and pointing to the need of a strong election monitoring team.
