This report examines political transition in Indonesia. It outlines difficulties of the democratization process, such as the resistance of the old elite and problems of the changing role of the military and possibilities for military reform. The paper points to regional conflicts, namely in Aceh, and considers them threats to national unity. It concludes by urging measures against widespread corruption and to strengthen the rule of law.
