This paper discusses the indicators of strategic failure in Afghanistan and Iraq and the spill-over into the wider region of the weakness, violence and hatred that these collapsed or failed states are likely to generate. The author argues that the consequences of such failure would include a boost to global terrorism, a re- legitimization of the ideologies that support terrorist groups, a fatal undermining of the Bush administration's grand strategy as outlined in the post-9/11 National Security Strategy, and a further fracturing of the trans-Atlantic alliance.
