This publication addresses US policy toward the Middle East and argues that it misdiagnoses root causes of instability by not focusing on Palestine, but on Lebanon or on democracy promotion in the region. The author argues that addressing Palestine would ameliorate Sunni-Shia rivalry but that it is unlikely that the US president will do this in the last two years of office. The author concludes that the Middle East will be further characterized by Sunni-Shia cleavages and by geopolitical games.
