This report addresses the role of women in grassroots peacebuilding, drawing on the findings of a seminar convened by the US Institute of Peace. The paper introduces the theoretical debate, provides an overview of the major schools of thought and examines the achievements of women working to end violence in their communities. Subsequently, the paper discusses the implementation of and support for women's peace movements and explores the contribution of women to post-conflict reconciliation and reconstruction efforts. The paper introduces cases from Colombia, Israel, Palestine, Somalia, South Africa, Latin America and Northern Ireland.
