This paper looks at the attempts by the so-called Islamic State to gain a foothold in Afghanistan by establishing the Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) within the country. More specifically, the paper’s author 1) outlines IS-K's history, composition, leadership, and struggles for power with the Taliban, particularly over parts of Nangarhar Province, and 2) provides a number of options for international policymakers to consider as they continue to help Afghanistan fight against IS-K and other militant groups.
