This paper looks at the likelihood that the UK will retain access to the EU single market, which would constitute a “soft Brexit,” when the UK leaves the EU. In particular, the text's author discusses 1) the relationship between the free movement of people and the single market, and 2) the reasons why a soft Brexit isn’t a realistic option unless the UK is willing to accept the current legal and institutional set-up of the single market until a final settlement is reached.
