This paper discusses the process of democratization in Mali. The author explains that since the 1991 uprising, which saw the ouster of the country’s long-standing military dictator and ushered in a democratically elected government, Mali has achieved a record of democratization that is among the best in Africa. The paper states that the process has been driven by a variety of factors, such as the country's heritage of tolerance and its tradition of decentralized government.
