This paper presents findings of a public opinion survey conducted in June and July 1993 in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan focusing on the issues of democracy, economic reform, corruption and organized crime, Islam, ethnic identity and foreign policy views. The paper shortly outlines the regions history, discusses its importance for the US and outlines in detail the survey's findings. The paper finds that the Uzbek and Kazak populations hold complex and ambivalent views on political and economic reform and that the concepts of democracy and market reform remain vague and ill-defined.
