This paper discusses reasons for and consequences of the violent break-up of Yugoslavia, focusing on the role of Serbian nationalism and demands for national self-determination. The paper reviews the history of nationalism in Yugoslavia, summarizes the history of interwar Yugoslavia and reviews ethno-national federalism under communist rule. Subsequently, the paper explores the role of Serbian resentment and outlines the violent breakdown of communism and the Yugoslav state. The paper argues that the international community had an important influence on the crisis and the dynamics of the conflict.
