This publication describes Venezuela's withdrawal from the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) and analyzes the consequences for the regional integration. The author examines possible reasons for the move, the responses of the various Andean partners and the impact of Bolivia’s decision to nationalize its hydrocarbons. The paper concludes that Venezuela’s decision to withdraw from the CAN has impacted the entire network of South American regional integration, undermining the Andean community itself and evidencing some of the limitations and contradictions of Mercosur.
