This paper analyzes the yearly released data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics for 2005. The data provides indirect information on the size of Spain’s yearly immigration intake. The author analyzes the local population register data together with the official data on the number of issued residence permits in greater detail. The author highlights that the 2005 release is particularly interesting since this data will be used as the first "official" indication of the impact and effectiveness of the extraordinary regularization campaign, which turned some 560,000 irregular immigrants into regular immigrants in 2004.
